5 QUESTIONS WITH JOE BROWN
When did you discover your passion for dance?
I discovered my passion for dance at a very young age. My family says I was dancing before I could walk. I was that kid in every talent show or dance battle—and a habitual watcher of Soul Train and any music video with choreography.
What was your first big break? How did it come about?
My first break happened within weeks of my graduating with a masters in architecture (SCI-Arc) — on the heels of booking two major music videos for Nicki Minaj and Daddy Yankee while in school, my dancing at a live performance for choreographer Saleemah Knight caught the attention of my current agency (McDonald Selznick & Assoc.) and I was signed that week. It was momentous as I’d just decided to pursue professional dance full-time.
What accomplishment to date are you most proud of?
I’m most proud of choreographing and performing with Beyoncé for her Coachella show—her show signifies a culmination of all the 6+ years of training and brand building. To be part of such an amazing team with such an inspiring message was an achievement shared with my family, friends, mentors, and colleagues!
Why did you launch your brand?
I launched Stroll Groove & Step/Stroll as an experimental project initially to gauge interest on a style that I thought would work amazingly in entertainment. I envisioned a future take on traditional performance of African-American fraternities and sororities fused with the many cultural and social dance styles prevalent today. I wanted to introduce another vibe, another culture, another vocabulary to the industry as I’d taken an obsessive interest in my undergraduate fraternity days—choreographing stepping and strolling sequences littered with complex dance moves. I knew at some point it would manifest to what it is today, I just had to take that leap of faith!
What is the one thing we should know about you and your classes?
First and foremost, my classes are all about good vibes and good company! I do my best to set a fun, party atmosphere to match the high energy music. My class is part grooves (Hip Hop, Dancehall, Afro) and part stepping. You will get to test your sense of rhythm and precision while keeping the soul of dance alive!
